As parents, we worry every day about protecting our children. Now, with the pandemic, we are faced with even more worry. When the news of the Virus first hit, it appeared that children were not being severely affected, having mild symptoms, or rarely becoming ill. However, new information is now being reported about a mysterious syndrome affecting children ages 2-15, similar to the Kawasaki disease, which doctors believe, may be linked to the novel coronavirus.
Kawasaki disease is a rare inflammatory disease that causes inflammation in the walls of some blood vessels in the body. It is common in young children and includes symptoms of a rash and fever. Although Kawasaki disease is usually treatable; although, if left untreated, it can be life-threatening. Doctors are now trying to understand if this spike in Kawasaki-like cases is linked to COVID-19.
In New York City, 15 children who were recently, or previously, diagnosed with COVID-19, have been hospitalized for what appears to be symptoms of Kawasaki disease. These children, ranging in ages of 2 to 15, have presented symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and a low-grade fever, starting with symptoms such as a rash, conjunctivitis, and/or cracked lips. Doctors are now trying to understand if these symptoms are an underlying condition of COVID-19, or if it is the body’s response to COVID-19. Doctors across the world are comparing notes, trying to determine if COVID-19 is triggering an overreaction of the body’s immune system, perhaps weeks after the initial exposure to the Virus.
This new information will, no doubt, raise even more concern and panic among parents, who are already struggling with worry and fear for their children. Doctors continue to say that while these cases are still rare, they believe it is important to share this information with the public, to raise awareness and issue warnings to a parent to be on the lookout for certain symptoms. This new information just goes to show that COVID-19 does not spare any age group and can lead to serious illness no matter your age or demographic.
