“Intersecting Mental Health and Family Law to Create Parallel Plans”
Synopsis: When working with a client who has gone through or is in the midst of a family law legal matter, chances are you’ve encountered situations during sessions regarding the legalities of their case. As an Attorney, we often encounter similar situations, however, in reverse – a client will discuss their treatment with their mental health providers with us. There is often a very heavy overlap between mental health and family law, so there is a definite need to create a synergy between these fields to best suit our clients and help us educate each other.
Attorney Gwendolyn J. Sterk, Sterk Family Law, will discuss current Illinois Family Law and how the laws in Illinois are relevant to you and your practice, where differences lie, and how the similarities can unanimously help our respective clients.
Objective: Highlight the differences and similarities between the Illinois Dissolution of Marriage Act and the Illinois Mental Health and Disabilities Confidentiality Act and why these two acts play such an important role for mental health providers and legal professionals.
Goal: To understand how crucial collaboration between mental health providers and legal professionals is to not only protect our clients but to also protect ourselves professionally.
