Clear and Present Danger: When to Wave the “Red Flag” – Webinar hosted by the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association

August 17, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

There have been many unfortunate news stories about mass violent acts. The question is: Do mental health providers have any rights or obligations when they feel that their clients may be a risk to themselves or others?

Attorney Gwendolyn J. Sterk, Sterk Family Law Group, and Troy Siewert, Insightful Crisis Response, LLC., are teaming up to discuss legal orders, laws, and rights regarding red flag laws, firearm restraining orders, the new emergency amendment for Clear and Present Danger, and how providers can take action.

As a provider, what are your rights or what are your limitations when you have a client you may believe is about to engage in violent behavior? What are the differences between various restraining orders? How can pulling a community together to establish a crisis intervention program be beneficial?

Attorney Gwendolyn J. Sterk has been practicing family law since 1989 and successfully started her own law firm, Sterk Family Law Group, P.C., in 2015. Gwendolyn and her team believe in a holistic approach to the practice of family law and strive to not only service a client’s legal needs, but also help manage a client’s emotional and overall well-being. Ms. Sterk and the Family Law team work hard to establish connections with a vast network of counselors, support groups, and various other non-traditional service providers, who the team regularly partners with to assist clients on a case-by-case basis. Sterk Family Law Group strives to provide clients with the tools they need to be empowered by their life changes, and be encouraged to move on with integrity and dignity.

Troy Siewert is a retired 30-year law enforcement veteran, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer & coordinator, certified crisis intervention specialist, and trained crisis negotiator. Troy owns Insightful Crisis Response, LLC to provide high quality training to individuals, and organizations, on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to more effectively respond when an individual is in crisis.

This webinar is being hosted by the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association. The fee to attend is $20 for members and $50 for non-members: https://www.imhca.org/event-4906877
