Why did you choose to work in Family Law?

After an injury, I had to make an unexpected career change in 2016. I decided to go into
law. I registered for the paralegal program at South Suburban college. My very first elective
was a family law class. I fell in love immediately. I loved every aspect. I liked digging into
the finances, drafting allocation judgements, marital settlement agreements and
crunching child support and maintenance numbers. Right after graduation I tried to get into a family law firm and had no luck. I was able to start my career at a med mal firm and just did not like it! After getting some experience in a law firm, I decided to start the job search in a family law firm. I was fortunate enough to be offered a position at a family lawirm in Plainfield. I received a lot of hands-on experience but felt that I wasn’t learning everything there was to know. So, here I am!

What is your greatest fulfillment in working in family law?

Helping families through a difficult time. No one expects a marriage to end in divorce. But reality is, it happens.

How do you get away from stress and separate your work from your home life?

Unplug. You need to maintain balance. Keep work and home separate. Dedicate time for work and then for your family. One way I like to de-stress from work or from home is to step back, take a breath, alone time is great, hot bath, a walk, read a book, just take a minute for yourself.

Who is your hero?

My husband. My husband had a unimaginable, horrible childhood. He immigrated to the US from Mexico at the age of 16. He came to this country with nothing, alone. Literally just the clothes he was wearing. He immediately started working. He did everything he could to make it. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever met in my life. He is an amazing man, such a great husband and provider. Our family is so blessed. We never go without. He works countless hours, never complaining. He has given our family everything he always wished he had. He is supportive, always encouraging me to be better. He is my partner in crime! I couldn’t imagine doing this thing called life without him!

What do you like about working at Sterk Family Law Group, P.C.

I absolutely love the support from senior leaders and attorneys, the teamwork and the continuous room for growth and the opportunity for continued education is great. I like that everyone is willing to show you how to do things rather than belittle or make you feel less than when you do not know how to do something. Everyone has been so welcoming. It is definitely a breath of fresh air!
