Attorney – Sterk Family Law

Donna is an attorney whose primary area of practice is Estate Planning and Probate. Donna has experience handling decedent’s and guardianship estate, including being a Court appointed Guardian Ad Litem, Attorney for alleged disabled adults, and representing Guardians of Minors.

Donna is actively involved with various bar associations. She also brings to her cases legal experience in litigation and Elder Law. Donna joined our team at Gwendolyn J. Sterk and the Family Law Group P.C., in 2018.

What do client’s look for in an attorney?

In the area of estate planning and probate, especially, it is important for clients to have someone who will give them a voice and understand family issues.   Clients often looks for an attorney who will be able to represent their wishes at death or incapacity.  “

Why did you choose Estate Planning and Elder Law?

I didn’t choose this area of law, if chose me.  I initially assisted a friend who owns a funeral home with presentations at local churches on Wills and Trusts.  My initial plan upon entering law school was to become an intellectual property attorney.

What is your greatest fulfillment as a Estate Planning/Probate attorney?

The greatest fulfillment as a estate planning/probate attorney is to be able to assist individuals with their wishes and to assist families with understanding the documents they loved one created.

How do you get away from stress and separate your work from your home life?

Get away?  What is that?  I don’t think that I ever get away from the office.  Being a family law attorney is almost a 24/7 job.   I do however schedule a time to relax and take care of my home.

Who is your hero?

My hero is Harriet Tubman.  I always admired her strength and willingness to risk her own life to help others.

What is your favorite quote?

Psalm 46:10 — Be Still and Know That I am God.

What do you do in your spare time?

Travel, read, watch reality television shows, spend time with family.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

Completing Moody Theological Seminary, being a minister and doing outreach with justice-involved women and their children.  Overcoming being a teenage mother.

How do you like working with Gwendolyn J. Sterk and the Family Law Group, P.C.

I LOVE IT! Working with a group of individuals who believe in the holistic approach to practicing law and where I can be my authentic self.  Everyone here is supportive to each other, clients, opposing parties, and the community.

What is a fun fact about you?

I love mentoring youth and am called Godmommy or Aunttea by numerous young people I have mentored.

What is your favorite holiday and why?

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because I get to bake for my family.

Are you connected to the counties in which you practice?

I am currently a resident in Cook County.

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a Giraffe.  I always admired the grace of the giraffe and how it could see everything from its height.
